Rent and vacancy rate survey for Alaska

Rent and vacancy rate survey for Alaska

The unit surveys landlords each year in cooperation with the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation.  That’s done in selected areas which numbered ten around the state.

Economist Rob Kreiger penned the article.  He said the survey revealed an increase in rents and increase in vacancy rates which he called a little unusual.  He added that’s not unheard of, but generally rents and vacancies move in different directions.

The average rent for the areas surveyed increased from 2017 to 2018 by two percent, from $1,157 to $1,178.  The overall vacancy rate reached 7.9 percent up six-tenths of a percent from last year.

Juneau bucked that trend.   The Capital City  had the highest rents for two bedroom apartments at $1,377 while the vacancy rate decreased from 5 point 7 percent last year to 4 point 1 percent this year.

Rent for a  three bed house in Juneau on average is $2,142.  That’ surpassed by seven dollars in Anchorage and by $113 in Fairbanks which was the highest.
